Registration at the Migration Office and/or Residents' Registration Office

Once your visa application has been approved and your visa has been stamped in your passport, you may enter Switzerland and take up residence here. Visa-exempt non-EU/EFTA nationals may receive a pre-approval for a residence permit, which they should present at border control upon arrival. All non-EU/EFTA nationals must register with the relevant local authority in Switzerland within 14 days of their arrival.

Please note, the registration process is slightly different in every Canton depending on where you will live. Below we provide information for the Cantons of Lucerne and Zug.
If you're going to live in another Canton, please contact the International Office of your school for more information or contact the Migration Office of your Canton of residence directly. [1]

STEP 1
In order for you to live and study in Switzerland, you will need a residence permit - regardless of your visa requirements. If you live in the Canton of Lucerne in order to get your residence permit you must register in person at the residents' registration office (in German: Einwohnerkontrolle) of your city / municipality within 14 days of entering Switzerland. An online registration is - to our knowledge - only possible in the city of Lucerne.

Here are the adresses of the residents' registration offices of the most common places to live in the Canton of Lucerne:

Lucerne City:
Please register online through the Registration form on this website. You will have to create a login (in German: "Konto erstellen") with a personal email address and a password. You can find the link to create a login by scrolling down on the Registration form page or by clicking here (click on "Konto erstellen").

Please note the following:
- After the residents’ registration office has checked your registration, you will receive an email with instructions about which documents you need to send by email to complete your registration.
- Normally, foreign nationals must register in person. Only international students are allowed and asked to register online!

If you have trouble registering online, you can still register in person at the residents' registration office (no appointment needed - please check the opening hours). The address is:
Obergrundstrasse 1
6003 Luzern

Emmenbrücke:
Rüeggisingerstrasse 22
6021 Emmenbrücke

Kriens:
Stadthaus Kriens
Stadtplatz 1
6010 Kriens

Horw:

6048 Horw

Students might have to bring the following:
  • Valid passport
  • Confirmation of Enrollment (will be issued by your Student Services Coordinator or Exchange Program Coordinator on the first day of the semester)
  • Copy Tenancy agreement

STEP 2
After having registered at the “Einwohnerkontrolle”, you will receive an email or a postal mail with an appointment invitation from the Migration Office and an invoice to pay for the residence permit. During this appointment, your biometrical data will be captured. Non-EU citizens receive an identity card with biometric data.
The appointment at the Migration Office is binding, but maybe there's a possibility to change the appointment schedule on your own online, the appointment invitation letter will tell you so. You can either pay the invoice or bring sufficient cash or a debit card to the appointment at the Migration Office:
